Episode Summary
In this episode, we’re discussing the causes of missing period. My guest Stefanie Adler and I talk deeply about Hypothalamic Amenorrhea (HA): The mysterious reason why too much exercise is harmful for getting your cycle back.
One of my favorite quotes from Stefanie in this episode is “When your body is in fight or flight it can’t be in feed & frolick”
Exactly! If our bodies think they don’t have enough resources they will not create a baby!
Prolactin from a beginning tumor called a Prolactinoma can also have an effect on ovulation!
PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) and HA often get confused so we discuss a simple test to help you and your doctor to determine if you have PCOS vs HA.
POI (Premature Ovarian Insufficiency) is another common cause of a missing period and it is not the same as going into early menopause. If your cycles are more irregular and you are under 40 it could be POI. One test to run (if getting pregnant is important to you) is getting Anti Mullerian Hormone (AMH). Sometimes if it’s low it could be POI. The good news is AMH can go up and this is something we discuss on the episode!
What to do if your period has gone missing?
1. Ask a million questions about the cycle
2. Then rule things out
3. Check out symptoms, any blood work to back it up
